The Faculty of Archaeology was founded as the third academic faculty of Silpakorn University in 1955. The main purpose of the faculty during that time was to produce trained archaeologists with capability in museum works, archaeological excavations, and historic monument conservations and restorations for the Thai Fine Arts Department. The first Dean of the Faculty was Luang Bariban Buriphan. In 1974, the curriculum of the Faculty was firstly revised to accommodate degree programs in other areas of social sciences and humanities, apart from archaeology. Researches in the areas related to the current academic programs on offer have become a major part of the academic activities carried out by members of the Faculty of Archaeology. The Faculty also frequently holds trainings, seminars, lectures, and exhibitions. In addition, cultural study tours are regularly undertaken to enhance academic knowledge and promote public interest in cultural heritage of Thailand. Students are also encouraged to take part in regular and special activities organized by Silpakorn University. The academic supporting units in specialized areas are also established, for example, the Sanskrit Studies Centre and the Centre for the Study of Ancient Arts in Asia.
